Support SBCA this Holiday Season
2020 has been a year we will all remember. At Save Barton Creek Association, we felt the uncertainty as our in-person conservation programming was forced to change formats and we were faced with significant funding losses as a direct result of the pandemic. These challenges make it all the more remarkable to look back at all we’ve accomplished this year.
(Scroll down for three ways you can support SBCA today!)
Some notable successes include:
We undertook a bold Adopt-a-Tree program, allowing 18 organizations, 10 elected officials, and many individuals to share their concern about TxDOTs Oak Hill Parkway plan and show their support for the community’s less destructive alternative, Livable Oak Hill.
We are in an ongoing mediation with TxDOT over the project and continue to rely on our tree adopters. In fact, we are gaining more adopters as we continue to work for a less destructive design in Oak Hill.
We hosted 10 virtual Happy Hour speaker events and hosted “virtual” park cleanups where members picked up trash individually and shared their photos with us.
We put out a report on Wastewater in the Hill Country in October. The report scored the 48 municipal sewage discharge plants in the Texas Hill Country, finding that 81% of plants put unauthorized pollutants into Hill Country waterways in the last 3.5 years. We also found remarkably low enforcement of these violations.
We continued to be the organizing force behind the No Dumping Sewage Coalition, a multi-group effort to stop wastewater pollution in the Texas Hill Country.
We continued to distribute our Explorer’s Guide to the Hill Country Oasis, an educational field guide, in print and online and plan to reprint in 2021.
We continued to coordinate our Creek Crew Young Professionals Group, offering opportunities to volunteer, get involved in environmental advocacy, and socialize peers.
We continued to build strong partnerships with other organizations and individuals including through our membership in Austin Outside, the Hill Country Conservation Network, and Earthshare of Texas.
Because of generous donations from individuals and foundations we have been able to maintain our staffing and programs, albeit many in a virtual and safe environment.
Our challenges continue into 2021. Help us rise to meet them.
